M.D. Medical Director, Psychiatrist
Medication management is the ongoing process of finding the right psychiatric medication and dose, then monitoring results, side effects, and interactions over time. At BestMind’s Clackamas clinic on SE Sunnyside Road, licensed psychiatrists, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners provide this care in person and by telehealth, often within three to four days.
There is a version of psychiatric care where you get a prescription, and a version where you get a plan. The difference is easy to miss until you have experienced both.
In the first version, a medication gets started and then more or less runs on autopilot. The refill goes through every month, nobody asks whether it is still doing what it was supposed to do, and side effects turn into something you quietly work around. In the second, someone is tracking how you are actually doing, adjusting when the situation calls for it, and treating that first prescription as a starting point rather than a verdict.
The second version has a name. It’s called medication management, and it is most of what good psychiatric care looks like day to day.
What is medication management?
Many mental health conditions respond well to prescription medication, but a prescription alone isn’t treatment. Medication management is the ongoing process of evaluating and monitoring how a medication is working: its results, its side effects, and how it interacts with anything else you take. Not every psychiatric medication works for every person, and finding the right one at the right dose is a process, not a single appointment.
That’s the difference between getting a prescription and getting care. Medication management means someone is paying attention over time and adjusting the plan as your needs change.
How does medication management work at our Clackamas clinic?
Care at BestMind Clackamas starts with a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation with a licensed provider, who reviews your history, symptoms, and past treatments to build a plan tailored to you. From there, you begin treatment, and your provider adjusts the dosage or tries a different medication based on how you respond. Ongoing monitoring helps reduce side effects and improve outcomes over time, so you’re not left managing a prescription on your own.
What conditions can it help?
Medication management can support a wide range of conditions, including depression, anxiety, ADHD, bipolar disorder, OCD, and PTSD. Our Clackamas providers, who include licensed psychiatrists, certified physician assistants, and advanced nurse practitioners, work across all of these, and often coordinate medication with therapy and other services for a more complete approach.
Why finding the right fit takes time
If you’ve tried a medication that didn’t help, or caused side effects you couldn’t tolerate, it doesn’t mean medication won’t work for you. It often means the fit wasn’t right yet. Bodies respond differently, and dialing in the right medication and dose can take a few adjustments. A good provider expects this and treats it as collaboration: you bring your experience of what’s working and what isn’t, and they bring the clinical expertise to respond.
In-person or telehealth in Clackamas
BestMind’s Clackamas clinic offers both in-person and telehealth appointments, so you can choose what fits your life. Telehealth is especially convenient for busy households, follow-up visits, and anyone balancing work or a commute. To prepare for a first appointment, bring a list of your current medications and dosages and any notes on what has or hasn’t worked before.
Frequently asked questions
How often will I see my provider? Visits are usually more frequent early on, while you and your provider are figuring out what works, and they tend to space out as things stabilize. Your provider will set a schedule with you based on the medication, how you’re responding, and what you need.
How long does it take for psychiatric medication to work? It depends on the medication. Some effects show up within days, while many antidepressants take several weeks before the benefit is clear. Your provider should tell you what to expect for your specific prescription, including which side effects tend to fade and which are worth calling about.
Can medication management be done by telehealth? Yes. Follow-up visits in particular work well by video, which is part of why telehealth has become a standard option rather than a backup one. Some situations call for an in-person visit, and your provider will tell you when that’s the case.
Insurance and getting started
If past attempts at medication have left you skeptical, that’s a reasonable place to start from. Wanting to understand the plan, ask questions, and know what happens if this one doesn’t work either isn’t being a difficult patient. It’s what the process is supposed to look like.
